Oh, hm. Good question. I know there were things like pointing out racism on MTV that struck me as a pretty good example. I think a list of charities can be found here but generally my research didn’t cover that part of his goodwill… if you haven’t already, ask @yourfluffiestnightmare because she definitely knows all the Bowie details I seem to be missing.
Wow I am trash with mentionings. I interpreted anon’s ask way different (bc it didn’t mention the charity stuff). Coming from Iman, David supported quite a few causes but very little are known.
- He flew to South Africa in 1995 e.g. for political reasons (and both Iman and him got death threats for it)
- he supported Save the Children (Alicia Key’s charity)
- then the already mentioned calling out racism on MTV, but to be honest I don’t know much else… he also was aware of racism as Iman and Bethann Hardison (his wife’s best friend) fought against it and just by getting the odd remark on the street for being in an interracial relationship, although of course they had some shelter from that due to their status
- he thought it was stupid to think a man would be beetter suited for a
job than a woman, unless maybe for physical discrepancies, and “then
again, a woman would be smart enough to hire somebody just for that”.- He used his own career and fame (”celebrating 50 years of Bowie”) for raising money for the Terrence Higgins Trust (against AIDS/ HIV) in July 2014 e.g. by giving them signed items to auction off
That’s pretty much everything I have?? Sorry
oh the “I am African” Iman was running for Keep a Child Alive he contributed to. and be was a supporter of Tibet independence since the 60s, and did a charity concert for it in the 90s and a song about it. the China Girl and Let’s Dance videos were meant to be activism
REBLOG BC OF THINGS I FORGOT!!!
