David Bowie by Mick Rock 1972

David Bowie, 1974, from The Last Five Years.
I really had it in my mind to do a musical about Nineteen Eighty-Four. It was a book I’d loved all throughout my youth. But, of course, I didn’t take into account the second Mrs. Orwell, who, when she got wind of what we were doing, absolutely put her foot down. Said we’re not having rock ‘n’ roll people work on my late husband’s great piece of work.
Interviewer: Since you’ve been in America, you seem to have picked up on a lot of the idioms and themes of American music and American culture. How’s that happened?
David: There’s a fly floating around in my milk and he’s a foreign body in it, and he’s getting a lot of milk. That’s kind of how I feel. A foreign body here and I couldn’t help but soak it up.
